Question 1

What is the difference between an ANSI safety label and an ISO safety label?

Accepted Answer

ANSI safety labels use a signal word panel with text to communicate hazard severity and are designed primarily for the U.S. market. ISO safety labels lead with registered ISO 7010 symbols inside defined surround shapes and are designed to work across languages. Products sold in both markets are usually best served by a single harmonized label rather than two.

Question 2

Are ANSI safety label standards legally required?

Accepted Answer

ANSI standards are voluntary consensus standards, not law. However, OSHA references specific ANSI standards inside enforceable regulations, and courts treat the standards as evidence of accepted industry practice in failure-to-warn claims. Compliance is effectively expected even where it is not directly mandated.

Question 3

Which ANSI standard covers product safety labels?

Accepted Answer

ANSI Z535.4, Product Safety Signs and Labels, governs on-product safety labels. It works alongside ANSI Z535.1 for safety colors, ANSI Z535.3 for symbol criteria, and ANSI Z535.6 for safety information in manuals and collateral.

Question 4

What does ISO 3864-2 require on a product safety label?

Accepted Answer

ISO 3864-2 sets the design principles for product safety labels, including which ISO 7010 symbols to use, what supplementary text belongs on the label versus in the manual, whether to include a hazard severity panel, and how borders separate content. It excludes chemical labeling, which falls under GHS.

Question 5

Can I use a symbol that is not in ISO 7010?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as a supplementary symbol, provided the label also carries at least one ISO safety symbol with a proper surround shape. A label carrying only non-ISO symbols does not meet the standard.

Question 6

How often do ANSI and ISO safety label standards change?

Accepted Answer

The ANSI Z535 family operates on a five-year revision cycle. ISO standards are reviewed on their own schedule and may be reaffirmed without changes. When a standard is revised, your duty to warn obligates you to reassess whether existing labels still comply.

Question 7

Do I need a risk assessment before designing safety labels?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Both ANSI Z535.4 and ISO 3864-2 assume label content derives from a documented hazard analysis. Labels specified without one tend to warn about the wrong things and miss the hazards that actually cause incidents. See understanding risk assessment and product safety.

Question 8

What happens if my product safety labels are not compliant?

Accepted Answer

Non-compliant labels increase exposure to failure-to-warn and inadequate-warning claims, can block market access in regions that require conformity to current standards, and reduce the practical effectiveness of your hazard communication. See product liability and warnings.
