Write-on safety labels and tags

When a write-on label makes sense

Printed wording suits a hazard that never changes. A write-on label suits one that does: a machine out of service until a date, a temporary hazard during a shutdown, a chemical decanted on site, a valve closed for repair, or a test result that changes with every inspection. The header is printed so the alert reads at a glance, and the details are written in on the day.

Write-on designs also cover the gaps in a stock range. One pack of blank DANGER labels can stand in for many one-off messages while you order printed versions of the ones you use most.

Choosing a surface that takes ink

The surface decides how well writing lasts. Matte vinyl and matte polyester take permanent marker and ballpoint well. A glossy overlaminate protects print but can make ink bead or rub off, so write-on areas are usually left unlaminated. For outdoor or washdown use, ask about a clear protective cover applied after writing.

Layouts

• Header and blank: the signal word panel with an open message area.
• Header, symbol and blank: adds a safety symbol beside the writing area.
• Fill-in fields: printed prompts such as "Reason", "Date", "By" and "Contact" with lines to write on.
• Tags: the same layouts on a tag with a grommet, for equipment you cannot label directly.

Write-on labels can also carry your logo, a serial number or a QR code.

Draft a write-on label in the label builder (start from a DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION or NOTICE template and delete the message text to leave the writing area blank), or send the header, any printed prompts, the size, stock and quantity on the quote form. We send a proof before printing.
